British Air Force Typhoon jets have operated alongside France's air force in a combined operation against an hidden munitions depot in Syria operated by the IS group, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The facility, located using surveillance, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was situated in hills just above Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes employed Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a series of approach shafts down to the depot... initial indications indicate the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the operation conducted Saturday night and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - referred to as Daesh - established extremist governance over significant areas in Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This action shows the UK's leading role, and determination to operate in unison with our partners, to eliminate any re-emergence of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary John Healey stated.

UK warplanes have carried out surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "deter any efforts to regroup" of the group after its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to every member of British forces participating in this mission for their professionalism and their courage," he commented. "They were among numerous British troops deployed over the holidays. This action, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who endanger our safety, shows how UK forces are prepared to act, throughout the year, protecting the UK within its borders and influential overseas."

During December, the United States armed forces executed what it called a "massive strike" on Islamic State objectives in the country, following an attack killed two US troops and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. estimates IS still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in both countries.
