Larian Studios Unveil a Fresh Divinity, Calling it Their Most Ambitious RPG Yet

The anticipation around this year's gaming ceremony has been intense, especially after host Geoff Keighley posted a mysterious photo of a desert monolith. The mystery has now been solved. The acclaimed developer is creating a fresh Divinity game.

Announced as Divinity, the game was presented with a daring trailer featuring intense imagery, from a burning man to scenes of revelry and the very opening of infernal gates.

A Different Direction

Anyone expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. The studio clarified that a follow-up to its beloved RPGs is not being worked on now.

However, the developer described this new Divinity as a continuation of the core franchise. This phrasing hints that the team is likely crafting a more action-oriented experience instead of another turn-based title. At this moment, we can only guess, as only a cinematic trailer is available.

A Pillar of Modern RPGs

The Divinity series is widely praised and arguably it sparked the recent resurgence of deep computer role-playing games. These games are defined by detailed worlds, player agency, and deep class systems—elements that recently were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its setting is familiar fare, what makes Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust bestowed upon the player.

In contrast to modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is packed with unique possibilities that are viable by choosing a specific type of character with a specific history of choices.

The series is also wonderfully permissive, allowing players to experiment in narrative and gameplay. Virtually all objectives can be solved in diverse methods, frequently in unexpected fashion.

  • You might progress the story because you heeded something a dog told you.
  • Or, you could bypass a challenge by teleporting a glob of lava in a inventive way.

The Journey Continues

It is this design philosophy that lead fans and critics to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as a top-tier role-playing games in history. Now, the RPG community can look forward to more where that came from in this legendary franchise.
