Prime Small Screen Selections: 7 Can't-Miss Films This Week

Pick of the Week

The Substance

Coralie Fargeat's daring commentary tackles the demanding standards for feminine aesthetics along with the perceived horrors of advancing years. Demi Moore presents an inspired portrayal as Elisabeth, a mature film star reduced to starring in a fitness program on TV. Pushed out thanks to her unscrupulous employer Harvey, played by Dennis Quaid, she turns to an enigmatic and gruesome process titled this experimental method. This creates a youthful duplicate called Sue, culminating in a progressively vampiric relationship between the two. Friday 17 October, Paramount Plus

The Woman in Cabin 10 Film

This suspenseful thriller stars Knightley in the role of Laura, a skilled journalist who opts for a hiatus from covering international wars to embark on a high-end voyage accompanied by a gravely sick Norwegian shipping heiress and charitable figure, her partner, as well as other extremely wealthy passengers. But after an unknown lady falls into the sea during the evening and the entire crew insists she wasn't real, the reporter's sleuthing skills awaken. Available now, Netflix

Presence Film

The acclaimed director pushes his film-making abilities through this nifty supernatural story filmed completely through the eyes of the phantom. When a household with Lucy Liu as Rebekah and her distressed teen Chloe moves into their recent residence, the camera – AKA the Presence – tracks their movements. The daughter appears conscious of the poltergeist, and it looks like defensive toward her. Yet what is the reason? The premise is enjoyable that remains concise, including a revelation you might not see coming. Saturday 11 October, multiple showings, the Sky channel

The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent

Cage embraces his cult stardom via this autobiographical spoof. He acts as an egotistical film star named Nicolas Cage who takes on a lucrative offer to appear at a festive event on the Spanish island for the wealthy Javi Gutierrez. Recruited by the intelligence agency to investigate the alleged criminal, Cage's unique performing skills proves useful. Saturday 11 October, prime time, on Channel 4

The Black Phone Horror

Scott Derrickson's claustrophobic thriller holds up well despite the lack of a continuation. Set in 1978 Denver, a series of kidnappings has rendered the children on edge. Once Finney gets captured by the kidnapper and locked up in a basement, he dreads a fatal end. Yet the old telephone mounted nearby keeps ringing, with eerie communicators providing assistance, as the prophetic visions of his sister Gwen might rescue him. An effective horror. This Saturday, late evening, the Film4 channel

The Tammy Faye Biopic

In the struggle between spirituality and money, the victory is clear for greed in Michael Showalter's delightfully tacky true story about the fallen TV preacher and her felon spouse. Garfield portrays the greedy Jim, who declares initially, claiming divine approval for wealth. The couple set about monetising the people's spiritual convictions. It's a riot of poor styling, bad makeup and bad faith, though Jessica Chastain manages to present the real-life figure as a sympathetic figure. October 14th, early morning, Film4

Black Bag

This week's second offering from Steven Soderbergh presents a espionage tale as sharp as the polo necks worn by Fassbender's UK spy. His assignment is with uncovering a mole inside the organization from a group of five – among them is his own wife. The two stars are experts of understated style, so a delicious psychological game of fact versus fiction takes place. The supporting cast join in the intelligent intelligence fun. This Friday, multiple time slots, Sky Cinema
